𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? Recently I was with a customer developing software products using multiple scrum teams.  When teams started working on a certain feature, only high level architecture was defined. This might leave nice responsibilities to the scrum team. But it is not helping in developing efficiently. Additional discussions are needed to clear out the architecture further. This slows you down. And the architectural outcome might be more complex; you might need more time to develop. Having architectural design well in place not only enables efficient sprints. It also enables developing reusable software. Which really accelerates your development cycles. It allows you to build on proven, tested components rather than starting from scratch each time. Regardless of how you handle architectural design, it’s crucial to prepare the necessary level of detail before the sprint that implements the functionality begins. Whether it's work for a dedicated architect or the Scrum team itself, it’s essential to organize this effectively. Curious to hear your perspective on this. How can we be predictable in our product delivery? I stumbled upon a term I like: "Quality on Time" by Niels Malotaux. Thanks, Niels :-). It perfectly sums up what predictability in product delivery is all about: delivering expected quality on time. For me, quality means customer value; the product should meet or (preferably) exceed the needs of your customer in terms of the problem it solves and its reliability. A lot of companies struggle with predictability. And being unpredictable usually has multiple reasons. When I start with a new customer, the first two things I tackle are: * Make sure you really understand the problem your product is solving for your customer. Not just you as a (product) leader, but your whole development team. * Have a solid organization and process to translate this understanding into actionable work packages for your development teams. Based on my experience, individuals from technical / functional backgrounds, such as - Developers, - QA specialists and - UI/UX designers Already possess many of the essential skills needed to become a Product Owner. To effectively transition into this role, they typically need to focus on developing two additional skills and performing two crucial actions to 'activate' their potential. A new year, a new certification. Why I wanted to get this certification at this point you might ask? Well I feel many of my FinOps work includes a lot of the product owner lingo and way of working. Therefor I found this a valuable extra to my profile to at least demonstrate that I can answer questions about Product Ownership in a certifcation. Looking forward using these skills more when talking to customers about FinOps and cloud adoption in the future!

Refinement sessions often get a bad rap. They can feel like they’re taking too long, slowing the team down before real work starts. But at ABN AMRO Mortgages, we learned that longer refinement sessions upfront can be the key to achieving faster delivery times later. Here’s what we did differently: We brought business stakeholders into the room. Questions could be answered immediately, and IT teams could clarify what was feasible from the start. Refinements became deep dives into requirements, eliminating ambiguity and ensuring both sides were aligned before development began. We leaned heavily on prototypes and wireframes, so everyone could see exactly what needed to be built. Yes, refinements took more time in the beginning—but this wasn’t a cost; it was an investment. The payoff was clear: ⏱ Delivery times dropped as rework decreased dramatically. 🤝 Collaboration improved because IT and business worked hand-in-hand. 🔍 Assumptions were replaced by clarity, leading to better outcomes. Refinement sessions are where the magic happens, but only if you approach them with the right mindset and structure. Is your team using this time effectively?
